In areas where grid power is unavailable or only intermittently available telecom operators are deploying hybrid diesel/lead-acid battery systems to power their Base Transceiver Stations (BTS). By coupling the generator with batteries, the generator can be run more efficiently while the batteries charge, and then turned off while the batteries discharge to support the BTS.
