When America’s grid was born over 100 years ago, the electricity system was designed around the concept that energy can’t be easily stored. This requires that we generate and use electricity in a real-time balancing act. And though we eventually figured out how to store energy in a number of mediums, we’ve yet to do so at scale—largely because of cost. But now electrochemical battery storage has reached a tipping point, with falling costs for the foreseeable future.
